ok , so we all know we don't live in a safe world today , and i believe that most of this violence and terrisiom comes from religions eg The middle east. What do you think? Is religion creating violence?

I for one think that it's ironic that religion , giving the only answer to 'who' created the earth and mankind, and yet it is religion that is tearing this world appart, destroying mankind

I think relgion is good , even though it might not be correct on how the world began but it still teach's people right and wrong and teachs people to respect each other , all relgions do. So its pretty hard to understand why people want to use violence?

Ok here is another place where i see both arguments. Does religion have a place in modern society? Well i don't beleive that religion is in fact "tearing this world appart, destroying mankind" I beleive religion to be like a magnet. Sometimes it will repel others but sometimes to attract and pull together. The only time i disagree woth religion is when it is imposed upon others. Many religious teachings are becoming obselete and is non applicable. Religions are becoming merged and mangled and only oooo 1 in three children under ten could tell you what christmas was about and why some fat bloke breaks into your house every year leaving presents wrapped in the same stuff as the presents from the rest of the family. Religion SHOULD BE an individual choice but is often enforced by family, culture, community etc. Religion is still evident, as can be seen in recent elections, in the world of politics. Generally modern religion is not taken sreriously and followed literally for example how many of you are not practicing christians but still received a card or present this year? anyhoo i feel that to be a long enough rant for now

Religion can control your life and in that respect it is not good. It is the cause for alot of wars and violence that are taking place in the world as we no it. But only if some people could relize that all the answers we need to guide us in life are inside, then there would be no reason for war. Religion in some respects can be good. It can teach people how do be and not to turn to violence as an answer for everything. Some people take well to religion and it helps them.

Religion i think is very good when its kept basic - it symbolises unity and the belief that everyone can be respected for their ideas. of course its total bullshit in real life, but in a small community - even a message board like this one - can let people communicate with each other and be heard.
of course, you do get the nutters who take religion too far, but then again, you'll get people doing that everywhere. whats the difference between "Satan made me do it" and "videogames made me do it" or "Death Metal made me do it". These are not reasons - they are pathetic excuses.
Finally, a topic i have a strong argument for!

Calvin's got the right idea going there. Religion is good when not taken to fanatical extremes. Everyone basically lives by the fundamentals of the Bible, Qu'uran, Torah Scrolls and so on and so forth as in "thou shalt not kill" for example. But people seem to forget this, which is where arguments begin over who is right or wrong in their faiths thus leading to major disagreements (understatement). Plus, and I feel very strongly about this, I hate ppl pushing their religion onto others! If a person is going to turn to religion then it will be which and when they choose.

The concept of religion is one that should, theoretically, unite everyone. All religions teach non-violence, however most wars and deaths are in the name of religion.
I think it is like communism. In theory, it is a great concept and would put us all in a utopia of a world. However, due to human nature it's not like that. Religion teaches equality, however because we ARE NOT equal (it's just a fact of life people need to accept), people secretly and without realising it actually despise being told this. Therefore arguments break out, and wars break out over a simple concept which deep down it is physically impossible for us to accept

god, it's starting to sound like an RE lesson (just kidding) ;D
true, we are not all born equal, but we can still treat each other like equals. people who discriminate people who are, say, disabled may one day find themselves in that position. what can they say then? they are usually the first to complain. Its the same with religion. we may have different religious beliefs in the future, but we don't want to be ridiculed for our views. so why do this to others? if people do find other peoples ideas hard to accept, then why dont they just get on with it instead of causing a huge war? once again, there are no reasons, just bad excuses.

In many senses religion is very good, for example the ethics it teaches. All religions teach or beleive they teach good ethics that conform to unite a society or community. Many of the teachings are stories for which people can derrive their own meaning from but when teachings are taken as literal then it becomes dangerous. Galileo said that the Bible was meant to teach people how to go to heaven - not how the heavens go. This can be seen explicitly in the christian creation story.
